Why did many homesteaders find it difficult to acquired good land in the West
The history of the United States proves that the Americans can be considered as a really powerful nation, because they coped with so many challenges on their way to success. In fact, the House of Representatives passed the act concerning the matter of homestead legislation for three times before the Homestead Act in 1852, 1854, and 1859. However, none of those attempts was successful. This is why many hopes were connected to the last act: homesteaders truly believed that they got an opportunity to develop their farms and get profits. Unfortunately, the conditions of the Homestead Act were not that successful for the homesteaders: it became more difficult to find and buy good land in the whole territory of the West. In order to find out what caused the difficulties for the homesteaders to buy good land, it is necessary to clear up what the conditions of The Homestead Act were. The conditions of that act were rather disappointing for many homesteaders, because many challenges were on their way to getting really worthwhile land: first of all, an application had to be filed, where a person, who was not born in the United States of America, claimed for 160 acres of Government land; secondly, the person, who got the land, had to live on that land and improve it during 5 years; and finally, after 5 years, the homesteader should file for a patent and prove that the land was improved. Only in case, all those steps were passed successfully, the land could be bought. T aking into consideration these conditions, it is possible to say that such land measurement and high pricing were aimed at Government generating but not at encouraging settlements. Unfortunately, many homesteaders just did not have an idea of how to improve or at least start their business, this is why the only thing they had to do is to file claims, work, and wait. In order to get better land, a lot of homesteaders were eager to compete and use all their financial reserves. The process of industrialization made lots of people to think more about their future but not about their present. If a person wanted to achieve certain success, he/she should work hard for some period of time, and with time, observe outcomes and enjoy the profits. This is why the process of industrialization may serve as one more reason of why so many homesteaders could not acquire good land in the West. In general, the difficulties, the vast majority of homesteaders faced with while acquiring the good land in the West, are caused by two reasons: one of them is the process of industrialization that was spread over the United States of America at the end of the 19th century, and another reason is the conditions of the Homestead Act of 1862. At the beginning, it was too difficult to buy any piece of land because of high pricing and damages after the wars, and with time, peopleââ¬â¢s competitions became another challenge of the Americans. Modern Architecture essays
Modern Architecture essays During the early twentieth century architecture took a new turn into the more modern way, with clean lines and a new influence of nature, which resulted in a new era of design as a whole. With this new way of thinking came a line of architects that would take architecture into a revolution, such as William Le Baron Jenney, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Their ideas would change the way of architecture and would have a lasting impression on architecture in the future along with how it was taught. The Industrial Revolution had so changed technology and design that old concepts no longer seemed right. Starting in 1840, leading artists, designers, and critics tried to develop new approaches to architecture. Modern architecture has its roots in a number of different origins. One of the persistent ideas in 20th-century architecture, however, is the belief of many, engineers as well as architects, that beauty could be seen in the clear expression of the structural properties of the new materials (Curtis 25). As iron, glass, and steel became available, building construction was no longer limited to stone and wood. One structure built for the Paris Worlds Fair of 1889 showed this exactly. The Eiffel Tower, by Gustave Alexandre Eiffel, which was seven-thousand tons of steel, was erected to soar nine-hundred eighty-four feet into the sky, as part of the centennial celebration of the French Revolution. Like this steel skeleton many other buildings would soon use the same type of way to build. High-rise buildings were made possible by the building of a steel cage, on which to hang the floors and walls. The basic skyscraper office building took form in Chicago by the 1890s and spread rapidly elsewhere. Involved were some exceptionally able architects, including members of the Chicago School. The Chicago School, an American architectural movement based in late 19th-century Chicago, was the ...

Association between Infant Breastfeeding and Overweight in Young Essay
Association between Infant Breastfeeding and Overweight in Young Children - Essay Example The objective of the study was then "to determine whether breastfeeding and its duration are associated with a reduced risk of being overweight among young children in the United States." (American Medical Association, 2001) According to the research, the data gathering proceeded by utilizing information on infant feeding and child overweight status from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). This is a cross-sectional health examination survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (NCHS/CDC) from 1988-1994. Through a stratified, multi-stage probability design, a sample of 2685 US-born children between the ages of 3 to 5 years (36-71 months) was taken. From this sample, birth certificates, details regarding height and weight measures, and information on infant feeding were obtained. The statistical results showed that there was a weak association between duration of full breastfeeding and child body mass index (BMI). However, there were factors that were significantly associated with child overweight in the multiple logistic regression models. By far the strongest predictor of child BMI status was the mother's concurrent BMI. Children were at moderately increased risk for being at risk of overweight with an overweight mother but nearly 3 times more likely to be at risk of overweight with maternal obesity. Furthermore, overweight in early childhood was nearly 3-fold greater with maternal overweight and more than four-fold greater with maternal obesity. The study concludes with "there are inconsistent associations among breastfeeding, its duration, and the risk of being overweight in young children. Breastfeeding continues to be strongly recommended, but may not be as effective as moderating familial factors, such as dietary habits and physical activity, in preve nting children from becoming overweight." (American Medical Association, 2001) The manner by which this research is conducted is very much ethical in the sense that there was no need to actually study and 'experiment' on the children. This would have had negative effects on the young children since their weights and eventual self-images are in question. The use of existing records and information as well as corresponding statistical analyses have been sufficient in arriving at the conclusion. The research design which used an ethnically-diverse sample also leads to a more consistent generalization of the results. From the findings of this research, a call for the more active role of the nursing clinical practice can be very beneficial in helping a population who is increasingly having problems with early childhood overweight. Because the association between duration of breastfeeding and being at the risk of overweight is inconclusive, then the emphasis should go back to the different socio-demographic and intervening familial factors among children. Since breastfeeding alone is not sufficient to prevent the development of weight problems at the onset of childhood, then the research leads us to the extent by which familial tendencies to obesity are genetic or associated with shared dietary and activity habits. The challenge for the

It will describe and summarize the comparison of both organizations and their fiscal stability. It will also detail the typical business cycle of these two companies. Pro-Forma Financial of General Electric and Bank of America General Electric and Bank of America are two companies in the US that are competing to increase their sales, as well as their income in order to increase profits. Both companies are very strong financially: GE is an agglomerates industry with a market capital of $259.56 billion and Bank of America one of the major financial institutions with a market capital of $183.25 billion. Both companies make an effort to improve their bottom figures in each financial year. Bank of America had some merging and restructuring expenses in 2008, but was still showing remarkable earnings. However in the latest first-quarter 2014 report, a net loss of $276 million was published. In 2014, GE decided to acquire the power and Grid business of Alstom. GE expects the deal to be accretive to earnings in the first year. (www.businesswire.com, 2014). Financial Viability and Ratio Analysis of General Electric According to the GE third-quarter 2014 annual report, the organization is performing well and has experienced profit growth since 2013 in the following areas: operating earnings, revenues, industrial segment profits, industrial segment organic revenue, and growth market orders. In addition, new technologies sparked an increase in equipment orders. Likewise, the organization has a strategy in place that has created growth in services business. GE will continue to simplify operations and focus on the needs of its consumers. Furthermore, GE is continuing to gain approval to acquire Alstom Power and Grid businesses. This acquisition is expected to takeà place in 2015. The acquisition is expected to increase GEââ¬â¢s cost per share and it will help GE obtain its goal of receiving most of its earnings through industrial businesses. (GE Reports Third-Quarter 2014, 2013) A ratio analysis is a ââ¬Å"quantitative analysis of information contained in a companyââ¬â¢s financial statements. (Definition of Ratio Analysis, 2014) It is used to ââ¬Å"evaluate various aspects of a companyââ¬â¢s operating and financial performance such as its efficiency, liquidity, profitability and solvencyâ⬠(Definition of Ratio Analysis, 2014). This is a great tool to calculate how the company is doing over a certain amount of time. GEââ¬â¢s efficiency ratio for dayââ¬â¢s inventory, for example, was 54.76, however in 2013, it was 77.36. Receivables turnover was another huge improvement from 2004, at 12.21, to 2013 at 6.81(General Electric Co, 2014). GEââ¬â¢s short term debt has decreased from 21.02% in 2004 to 13.24% in 2013 however the long term debt has increased, with 28.41% in 2004, and 36.97% in 2013. The current ratio has also improved with 2.39 in 2004, and 2.53 in 2013, this is a big win for GE! (General Electric Co, 2014) This shows that the company is more able to pay debts and short term obligations than when it first began (Current Ratio Definition, 2014). Financial Viability and Ratio Analysis of Bank of America In order to know the financial health of an organization, it is imperative to know the organizations financial viability. We have looked at the financial viability for Bank of America and find it to be a viable company. We looked at Bank of Americas Return on Investment (ROI) which is calculated by looking at Bank of Americas yearly return compared to the total investment we need for a project. Bank of Americas Revenue was 98,353 million with Net Income at 5,222 million for the year ending 2013. Total liabilities were 1,884,932 million with 2,123,613 million in total assets (Bank of America, 2014). Bank of Americas working capital ratio is 1.126 which shows us that is able to have enough cash to repay debts. Bank of Americas debt ratio is .8876 which shows that this company can repay long term debt. These few ratios help us see that this business is able to generate enough surpluses in order to meet their recurring payment obligation which also verifies the companys viability (Bank o f America, 2014). Business Cycle A business cycle is the growth or decline in an economy. As of today the economy has grown from the recession in September 2008 that left many people without jobs, the stock market plunges and many companies going bankrupt and closing. Furthermore, the goal of economic policy is to keep the economy in a healthy growth rate that create jobs for people, but slow enough to avoid inflation. Many factors can cause an economy to spin out of control, or settle into depression. The most important, over-riding factor is confidence of investors, consumers, businesses and politicians. The economy grows when there is confidence in the future and in policymakers, and does the opposite when confidence drops (Amadeo, 2014). Recent banking trends offer subtle indications about the business cycle. The financial crisis in 2008 stemmed from explosive monetary policy during the preceding period (Hofschire, 2014). During the financial crisis in 2008 it left a lot of companies wondering if they will ever get back to where they were before the market plunged. Financial institutions, such as Bank of America made it difficult for home buyers to take out loans to purchase properties. Although the housing market dropped, it was harder to qualify for loans because the qualifications were stricter. Furthermore, home owners were in upside loans because they could not afford to pay back the loans. During the financial crisis in 2008 General Electric (GE) was one of the major companies that produced numerous of appliances, such as refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and much more. However, they took a huge financial loss as their earnings started to decrease as sale prices declined (Smith, 2008). General Electric said profits from its money and commercial finance divisions should total $2 billion in the third quarter, down nearly 20 percent from $2.45 billion in the second quarter (Smith, 2008). General Electric Capital is a large contributor to the companys global earnings. Furthermore, General Electric had to give up some assets to raise their capital. As of today GE is one of the largest companies, which generate home appliances and they were able to overcome the financial crisis and regain their financial earnings. Conclusion This report shows that both GE and Bank of America are seeing steady growth and are slowly recovering from the recession. Both GE and Bank of Americaà seem to be in the expansion part of the business cycle as sales would project. GE has improved in its current ratio between 2004 and 2013, and Bank of American still needs to improve its current ratio. Both companies have seen an increase in many areas of their financials and plan to continue to increase sales and profits. References Alstom Board Chooses GE Offer. (2014, June 21). Good Instructor :: essays research papers
Whether a good or bad instruction can affect the learning of students. A lot of instructors had been teaching me through out my years in school. No doubt some of the instructors are good and some of them are bad. Whether the instructor is bad or good cannot be judge by his or her education background. It is also important that they have a good way and method of treating and teaching their student. Teaching individually will be very effective, however, it will not happen in a classroom. In order to be affecting in the classroom, I think the instructor should be patient to the students, understand how people learn, be familiar with the difficulties people have with learning, then recognize these difficulties when they occur in class and know how to overcome these difficulties, and finally plan and be prepared to teach. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã It is hard for an instructor to teach a lot of student with different learning ability at the same time; therefore, the primary factor to teach is patient. Patient is a primary thing to be an instructor. There are a lot of student in a classroom. The instructor should know that different person has different learning ability. Some Student may learn very fast but some learn very slowly. The instructor should not expect all students get the knowledge right after he taught. Student may ask a lot of questions or need to be explained a lot of time to understand the material. The instructor should be patient to the student when dealing with different students. Knowing that there are a lot of materials from the book to cover in a school year, a well skilled instructor should always plan ahead for the lecture. Remember there are poorly skilled instructors too - most of us have had inexperienced or poor teachers. Human: Atmosphere and Earth
Human have been damaging on the Earth for thousands of years. In fact, human activity has big influence on the Earth. Some people believe that the Earth is being damaged by human activity. In my opinion, I really believe that the human is damaging the Earth. There are three main ways to damages the Earth from human activity are deforestation , poisonous gases , and it makes pollute the environment. First, a human activity that damages the Earth is deforestation. Deforestation destroys a huge area of forest every year. The world forests could completely disappear in a hundred years by human activities. Furthermore , deforestation also cause the loss of plants and animals then lead some of them to extinction. This activity have made many negative effects to the environment and our the Earth.. Second, People living has produced a huge of poisonous gases. These gases are released by cars, factories , industrial , and etc. They cloud destroy ozone layer ,which could create a phenomenon cal led ââ¬Å"the green house effectâ⬠.The green house effect cause the temperature of the Earth increases . As a result, the ice in the North and South thaw and cause the water level becomes higher. This is one of the worst effects of human activities that damage the Earth. Third, human activities have polluted the environment very much on the Earth. People have built many factories to develop modern industry. These factories have released many toxic materials into the rivers, the soil, and the sea. The industry have killed many of plants, animals, and fishes. This activities have damaged the Earth too much. In conclusion, the human activities have made many negative effects on the Earth.
